Cumann na mBunscoil

In March our boys and girls football team participated in the Cumann na mBunscoil blitz. Well done to everyone involved!

GAA

Throughout the month of March the senior classes were very lucky to receive some Gaelic football training from the GAA.

Community Races

Delighted to share news that four of Sinéad’s Senior Infants went to the community races during the spring break and did a great job at representing CETNS.

They each ran the heats of the Under 8s 60m Sprint. They also ran the Under 8s Novelty Race. Finally they worked excellently as a team in the Under 9s 400m Relay Race.

It was a gruelling three hours but they were all very good and they all won an Easter egg for their efforts.

Well done to some of our older pupils who also participated in the races too.

Carlow Rugby Club

In April great fun was had, by our two boys teams and our girls team at the Carlow Rugby Club Schools Blitz. Big thanks to Gavin from Leinster Rugby and the refs and coaches from Institute of Technology Carlow for organising a great day out.

Carlow GAA

A big thanks to Brendan Hayden from Carlow GAA, who came in over the month of May after school to give a hand with Ciara,  and give some guidance to our budding hurlers and Camogie players as part of our after school club.

The children learned a lot and really enjoyed themselves, and some are hoping to now join up with their local clubs

Bike Week 2022

Children from the 5th and 6th classes had great fun as part of our Active Schools Week and Bike Week 2022 by becoming familiar with the new protected bike lanes around Carlow Town. It was great to see our bike racks so full in the mornings. We travelled around our town on the bike lanes and used the newly installed raised bike lanes near Hannover Park. We stopped for a short break in the redeveloped park before heading back to school. It was great to see the improvements and we look forward to the continuation of the next phase of this Active Travel project. We discussed it with the children afterwards and the segregation from the traffic made them feel far safer when cycling in Carlow.

Huge thanks to Carlow County Council and Carlow Sports Partnership for their generous sponsorship and to Southeast Cycling Safety and Bicycle Hire. Thanks also to our German guests from Hannover who accompanied us on two of the trips.

Hopefully we can look forward to more of our children being able to cycle around our town safely in future.

FAI Primary Schools 5s 2023

4th, 5th and 6th class girls and boys started their training in February for the FAI primary schools 5s 2023. They are working really hard at improving their soccer skills every Monday and Wednesday at lunchtime. They can’t wait to head off to the competition on March 21st.

Cycle Right

5th class worked with Cycle Right for 6 weeks doing a Cycling Safety course. They did four sessions in the school where they simulated situations they would encounter on the roads and how to approach them in a safe and responsible manner. Passing parked cars, cycling in a group, indicating, turning and much more. They then did a cycle from the school on a local route to use some of these skills into practice.

FAI Primary Schools 5s 2023

Well done to our girls soccer team, who finished top of their group today in the FAI 5-a-side regional tournament. Our boys teams were unlucky not to progress unfortunately.
The girls won all their games and came from 2-0 down in their final game to win 3-2. They now progress to the regional finals on Friday which will be played on the SETU campus pitches.
Our girls soccer team did themselves very proud today in the Carlow finals of the FAI 5-a-side school’s competition. Unfortunately they didn’t win, but can hold their heads high after a great performance.
Well done to Ballon National School for winning our group.

Cricket Staff Training

In March our staff took part in cricket CPD training  after school. Bernard from Cricket Leinster went through the various skills of the game and gave the teacher lots of new ideas on how to teach the game.

Carlow Athletics Relay

We had teams from 5th and 6th class competing in the Carlow Athletics Relay event in SETU today. Well done to our girls 6th class and boys 5th class teams who qualified for their finals.
Unfortunately both teams just missed out on medals as they finished 5th and 4th respectively in their finals. We brought 32 children to the event in total and they all had a great day out.

Bike Week 2023

Senior Infants made a great start to National Bike Week!

We had a great Bike Week 2023 and there were a huge amount of kids taking part in different activities over the week. Thanks to County Carlow Sports Partnership for the generous funding and to Jason from Cycling Safety for the lessons for the 5th classes leading up to our cycle down the Barrow. The infant classes and integration classes were practicing all week in the school grounds and we have a lot of newly independent cyclists with no stabilisers.
It was great to see the bike racks and the Geodome (the fanciest bike storage area in the country) full of bikes all week.
On Monday 22nd our school is going to trial it’s first ever Bike Bus for the 4th – 6th class children. The Bike Bus will be run by parents and teacher volunteers and collect children on their bikes all across Carlow town on the way to school. This is a great start to Active Week which runs all next week.

Bike Bus to School

Our first Carlow Educate Together National School Bike Bus went really well this morning. We collected children from different points across Carlow Town as we went and enjoyed our active start to the day.
If you and/or your child would like to take part in the next Bike Bus we are looking for adult volunteers to help out occasionally. Please contact mark@carloweducatetogether.ie if you are in a position to do this.
Thanks again to County Carlow Sports Partnership who helped enable this to happen.
