Application for Exemption from the Study of Irish Primary Schools

For completion by the parent(s)/guardian(s). By filling in this form, you understand that documentation provided may be reviewed for the purpose of processing this application by relevant school personnel and other professionals where necessary. Please read circular here: https://www.education.ie/en/Circulars-and-Forms/Active-Circulars/cl0052_2019.pdf

  • DD slash MM slash YYYY
  • Children are only eligible for an exemption from Irish from 2nd class upwards, (for rule 2.2(c))
  • Eligibility

In order to qualify for an exemption from Irish, you will need to fulfil certain criteria. Depending on which option you choose, you will need to confirm your child ticks each criterion. If you qualify, a message will pop up to state this and the next steps you need to take. However, if you don’t see the message, click submit to log your application and someone will be in touch. Please note that in cases of joint custody, both parents/guardians must consent to this process.
  • Please read these carefully. In some cases, you will need to check with the school to see if you qualify.
  • In order to satisfy the criteria, it is important to describe the reasons in detail for this application. The circular places much of the decision on the professional opinion of the principal. This can have consequences for both the school and the child if an incorrect decision is made. Please outline your child’s needs and his/her expreriences of learning Irish in school. This is hugely important in terms of making the final decision so please ensure to add as much detail as possible.
**** Please note: 3.4 What are the implications for a pupil not studying Irish? Irish language requirements for entry to third level courses/programmes of study are at the discretion of the relevant colleges and universities. These requirements may be subject to change and it is therefore important that pupils/parents are aware of such requirements. Information on third level entry requirements can be accessed on relevant college/university websites. It is important that parents/guardians and pupils are made aware that Irish is an entry requirement for access to programmes for initial teacher education (primary) offered in the four state funded higher education institutions. Information on entry requirements to these primary teacher education courses is available here https://www.gov.ie/en/publication/0595a4-e/#courses-that-support-access-to-teacher-training-pre-entry-to-ite-course
