GAA Training

Today our GAA training began in school. Erin and Teresa led the children out to the yard to practice skills. In the next couple of weeks, we hope to bring the children to the GAA club for classes. These classes will be on Tuesdays until the spring break then continue after this on Wednesdays.

Friendship Week

Could all children please remember to bring in a photo of themselves. The photos will be collected and used to decorate the school during Friendship Week 5th-9th of March. A huge THANK YOU to the parents who shared their ideas last Friday.

Friendship Stop

In January, our friendship stop arrived in school.

A very kind carpenter named Fran worked hard and made the sign for the school, free of charge. We are very thankful for his kindness……

Clare has been busy getting all the equipment needed to decorate it including paint, painbrushes and varnish. The sign is now at the priming stage and children have completed the undercoat and the sign is already looking great…… The pupils will be working hard painting and decorating the sign over the next few weeks.

This sign and all the hard work of the pupils will be unveiled during our Friendship week in school which is on the 5th-9th March.

We are all looking forward to the finished product and well done to all involved!!

Wind Turbine Project

1st and 2nd class children were bust for their upcoming competition entry at the end of February. The children, along with some very helpful parents, made a wind turbine that generated electricity. You can have a look at the video below to see the amount of electricity our turbine generated. After that, we decided to make a turbine powered by electricity. We learned about circuits and how they work. Using a motor, battery, switch and lots of wires, we made a cool turbine that we’re going to bring to the exhibition.

What Scares You Survey!

Some of the boys and girls from 3rd to 6th class have been discussing their fears. We created a survey to find out about what scares people. We asked Michael’s class the question “What are you most afraid of?”. Here are the results!

18 people were surveyed.

3 were afraid of heights

5 were afraid of spiders

2 were afraid of being forgotten

3 were afraid of being bullied

5 were afraid of something else including dying, guns, climbling tall trees, being treated badly.

We learned that everybody has fears.

5th & 6th reading with Adrian’s class

Today Adrian was sick so Conor, Jason, Alana, Kiaza, Josh and Daniel spent the day in 5th and 6th class. They worked really well and their behaviour was excellent. It was a treat for us all to have them with us for the day. The children from 5th and 6th were very welcoming and helped our visitors during the day. Here are some lovely pictures of 5th and 6th class helping our friends with reading activities.

Assembly – Guatemala and Human Rights

Claire led our assembly today and the children were very well behaved. Claire told us about a boy called José in Guatemala who was very poor. He is not allowed to go to school because he has to work. Even though there is a recession on in Ireland, we are still one of the richest countries in the world and all children have rights, which children like José don’t have. Amnesty International try to help children around the world who do not share the same rights as other children in richer countries. Claire gave some friendship bracelets to the teachers that were made in Guatemala and they are now for sale for €2 each. All money raised will go direct to Amnesty International.

Student Council Meets for the First Time

The student council met for the first time last week. In a very important part of our school’s history, the council discussed events, issues and ideas with Samantha who is leading the group. You can look forward to seeing some super initiatives coming to the school over the next few months including new games for yard and a cake sale. The student council’s reports will go to the Board of Management for the first time on 9th February.
